Family Constellations

As humans, we are wired for connection, seeking to belong from the moment we take our first breath. In our mother’s womb and ever after, we learn unwritten and deeply entrenched rules that define who we are… and how we belong. These beliefs that helped us survive, also become confining.

“These unconscious beliefs are “sentences that languish in our singular and collective psyche, spoken, heard and lived – they are systemic sentences…prison sentences.”

— Suzi Tucker

In present day life, we may wonder, ”What is preventing us from realizing our dreams?” A Family Constellation puts a family system into the physical space where we can discover entanglements deeply entrenched in a family’s trauma and identity. Family Constellations reveal insight into the root causes of our limiting beliefs, such as an unconscious loyalty to an ancestor. When root causes are out in the open, we can find resolution.

At the heart of Family Constellations are two main tenets:

  1. Acknowledging what is. The group work may highlight limiting beliefs or unconscious and deeply entrenched rules that defined how we first belonged. Uncovering the beliefs is the pivotal step towards change.
  2. Bringing forth radical inclusion. Family Constellations are guided by the Orders of Love. Part of the work may be to bring back someone who has been forgotten (whether they were purposely written out of the family history or because remembering was too painful). Once identified, the work is to restore them to their right place in the family system.

Echoing the studies of epigenetics where traumatic events change the trajectory of a family’s DNA coding, Family Constellations can shift foundational beliefs so that the client and their descendants can move toward freedom. Explore through Family Constellations the price of belonging.

What is a Family Constellation?

A Family Constellation is a therapeutic method which draws on family systems therapy, drama therapy and Zulu beliefs and attitudes about family. Through a healing circle, participants represent members in a family system to help the focal client/seeker gain insight into beliefs that the family may have held onto for generations…connected to the family’s rules around belonging…connected to a family’s trauma and identity. Healing can start when the client acknowledges what is.

What is the typical agenda of a family constellation?

The circle starts with introductions of the group and, if there are newcomers, a short introduction to family constellations. The main agenda is to look at one client/seeker’s constellation.

What does it mean to be a client/seeker?

If you are struggling with a persistent problem that feels like it cannot be resolved despite much effort, you may be a candidate for Family Constellations. The client meets with Yvette for an interview prior to scheduling an online or in-person group constellation where a group of participants represent your family system. Clients may also schedule a private 1:1 family constellation session where objects are used in place of people representing family members.

What does it mean to be a witness/representative?

Participants represent members in a family system to help the client/seeker gain insight into beliefs that their family may have held onto for generations. Representatives take on the essential qualities of who or what they are representing, and begin to sense thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations through the guidance of the “knowing field” which is an intelligence. They are able to reveal what is true even if they have no prior knowledge of what has occurred in the past. In that sense, there is an inherent wisdom in this field.

As a representative, you may receive wisdom or insight into your own issues from serving as a witness or a representative for someone else.
